Darius my friend,

Regret is a bitter, unquenchable thirst. I do not know what drives me to write this, for I don’t believe you lie any longer within my reach. Perhaps I write for myself.

After all of your attempts to make me move on, sign the divorce paperwork, and continue with my life apart from Ingrid, your tragedy has at last made me heed your advice. I’ve let her go, though the grief I feel for you is far more bitter a poison than her loss, for she still lives and you do not.

I still wish to God that I’d had the strength to resist you. I wish I’d refused your money—it wasn’t as though I needed it. But most of all, I wish I’d held to the conviction that I did you no favor when I told you the details of your own death.

Perhaps the bloody thing would have transpired whether I said it or not, but I fear your family will never forgive me, and I cannot seem to pardon myself.

So I ask you, who cannot hear me, forgive me, and do not send any vengeful ghost to wreak more pain. I pray it ends here.

Your friend,

Percy
